Island information

Here are some general items of information for visitors to Kangaroo Island.
The information below is based on that collected from various third parties and was accurate to the best of our knowledge at the time of publishing.

Kangaroo island, the third largest island off the coast of Australia, is 155km long and 55km at its widest point and cover 4500sqkm with 509kms of coastline. It takes approximately two hours to drive from Penneshaw to the western-end of the Island.
The ferry terminal at Cape Jervis is 110kms from Adelaide (two hour drive) and the crossing to Penneshaw takes 45 minutes. Passengers should be at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes prior to departure.

Getting around

Please note there is virtually no public transport on the Island, however the local council has (from March 2014) begun operating a limited bus service which may prove useful. For details visit www.kangarooisland.sa.gov.au/rockhopper.

The SeaLink shuttle bus operates twice a day between Penneshaw and Kingscote via American River to connect with morning and evening ferry services.

Alternatively, you can bring your own vehicle on the ferry, or hire a car on the Island through Budget (08 8553 3133) or Hertz (13 30 39).

REX Airlines (13 17 13) flies into Kingscote airport from Adelaide airport daily. If you need a transfer from the ferry terminal or the airport to your accommodation then KI Transfers can help (0427 887 575).

Caution on the roads

We urge caution on all island roads, especially unsealed roads. Please be aware that kangaroos, wallabies and possums are nocturnal and are often present on all island roads between sunset and the morning. Avoid driving between dusk and dawn, but if you do drive during wildlife active hours, exercise caution.

How long should I stay?

The KI Visitor Centre recommends staying on the island for a minimum of three days to give you a good taste of what there is to see and do. Five days will show you the sights but a week days will allow you to truly unwind and discover the magic of this nature wonderland.

Honey, potato and feral animal restrictions

Kangaroo Island is a bee sanctuary and is free of many of the mainland’s pests and diseases. Penalties apply for bringing honey products and bee-handling equipment to the Island.

The island's seed-potato industry also enjoys disease-free status. Potatoes brought to the island must be in new packaging. Peels and unused potatoes must be disposed of to ensure that re-germination is not possible.

There are no foxes or rabbits and these are prohibited on the island, as are declared weeds.
